Frequently Asked Questions

AAC has a century-long track record. Many homes and buildings in Europe have stood for over 100 years with little structural maintenance. Our featured project in Radium Hot Springs, BC, has endured more than 60 Canadian winters — even without an exterior finish.

Historically, reinforced AAC (RAAC) was used in Canadian construction between the 1950s and 1970s — particularly in Ontario for floor and wall systems. Since then, the industry has shifted toward wood, OSB, and concrete-based materials, and AAC has largely disappeared from the Canadian market. Meanwhile, AAC technology has evolved significantly worldwide. Today’s AAC is stronger, more efficient, and more versatile than ever. Rocksolid is leading the effort to reintroduce this proven material to Canada — bringing global innovation to meet Canadian building challenges.

AAC construction is significantly faster than traditional wood-frame or ICF methods. With fewer layers and faster wall assembly, many residential AAC homes can be fully built in 3–4 months — or even faster with trained crews and good planning.

It’s a mixed picture. Between the 1950s and 1970s, Reinforced AAC (RAAC) was widely used and approved for use in Ontario. Today, modern AAC is technically sound, but it must go through a fresh approval process. Rocksolid is actively working with authorities to streamline this path, and we welcome like-minded partners ready to help bring AAC into the future of Canadian building.
